in Cutting tax
I'm on ESA and have recently been awarded a PPI refund, the letter states I can possibly claim back the tax if not a tax payer. I've downloaded the form and can't make head nor tail out of it. I don't even know if I'm a tax payer or not being on ESA.
Can any kind soul help me decipher the form and put a claim in? I think I need to fill in section 7 " Any other Income or Benefits" specifically 7.4, 7.5 and 7.6. But no real idea if this would be right.

If your income, including the interest, is below £9400 in this tax year, you are not a taxpayer. I am no expert on ESA but you would also include the taxable element of this - probably all. There are 10 types of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who do not. :doh:0 -
Probably best to ring HMRC and ask them what you need to complete on the R40, the help line is 0300 200 3300, you'll need your National Insurance number, lines are open 8 - 8 on weekdays and 8 - 4 on Saturday, I've found calling first thing gives the best chance of a short wait.0

The award you received presumably contained an element of interest from which income tax has been deducted. This interest is part of your taxable income for the tax year and should be included on the form. The tax deducted is the maximum refund you can expect because it sounds as if you have not paid any other tax; do you have any savings income outside of an ISA?

You will need to fill in the whole of the form that is applicable to you. This is a "bare your soul" document, for all your taxable income in the tax year.
When you downloaded the form you could also have downloaded the instructions which are fairly comprehensive.

Section 7 will be OK for the interest from your PPi award. The only thing that is constant is change.0 -

Yeah my income even with the ppi refunds is well below 9400!!Probably best to ring HMRC and ask them what you need to complete on the R40, the help line is 0300 200 3300, you'll need your National Insurance number, lines are open 8 - 8 on weekdays and 8 - 4 on Saturday, I've found calling first thing gives the best chance of a short wait.
Ah, problem is my health condition makes it extremely difficult to use the phone!zygurat789 wrote: »The award you received presumably contained an element of interest from which income tax has been deducted. Problem is I've just endured a long appeal against a WCA that found me fit for work and won the tribunal, so since may 2012 I have had a very confusing time with my ESA starting of contribution based at £71 a week then going income based at £30 a week, and now after my appeal is £88 a week, so I have no idea what my annual income has been. I think I need a new P60? So I have no idea what to put into section 2.5 and 2.6 (I presume 2.6 will be zero).
Even with the PPI refund I cannot afford to pass up reclaiming 300 or so quid, especially as I'm likely to lose my DLA and face a very difficult time in the future.
Due to my problem with using a phone I've tried in vain to find a way to contact HMRC via email...sadly I couldn't find an address.0 -

I assume the interest was received in the tax year to 5 April 2014.
Hmrc don't do emails, some would say it's not in their interest since thay don't get a rake off from the phone cost you have to pay on 0845 nos. but it could also be due to security concerns.
You obviously don't know what your income will be but you should take steps to ensure that you do when the time comes. You could start by writing to the DWP, it sounds as if a visit is out of the question. The only thing that is constant is change.0 -

But as I pointed out in post #3 HMRC use an 0300 number, and have done for at least the last 15 months (which was when I last called them).0 -

They may well do but it has been an awfully well kept secret thus adding more power tio the argument that they were making a fat profit. I wonder if they were taxed on it?The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
Not that much of a secret, it's the number listed on their Contact Us page.0
