Scottish power prepay meter- how am I in debt?

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me? Iv recently bought a house and the house is using pre pay meter with Scottish power, iv been using the meter for three months as I have now moved to another supplier to pay direct debit. In the three months iv been doing up the property so have hardly used any gas and electric. We received a final Bill off Scottish Power claiming that we owe some money, after speaking to them on the phone the guy claims that we owe money as when we topped up we had a lower rate then when we topped up again the price per unit had risen so we had used it at the lower rate when it had gone up! I totally disagree with paying this as I have topped up at a certain price and I feel that they have penalised me as I'm not going to top up everyday to make sure my meter is saying the right price... Do I have a leg to stand on with this argument?
Any help or advice is much appreciated, thanks

Why do you think it unreasonable that you pay rather than just a little annoying? You are not being penalised.

If this option were not possible for the supplier then people would be free to do a postage stamps thingy. They could monitor for the date of the price increase and then the day before load up the prepayment meter with £499 of credit. Seven or eight months or more usage for the old price. (Only £250 on some meters.)

It may be annoying if you were unaware prices had changed but suppliers will normally inform you by post about this (previous occupants may have received this.)
