Getting rid of smells in new rental home

Not sure if this is the right place so mods, feel free to move the thread to somewhere more appropriate if needs be.

Right...I've been in my new rental home a week now. There is an odd smell lingering throughout...

My boyfriend insists it is a bit cigarette smokey, I'm not convinced but couldn't put my finger on what it is. It's not a cooking smell...more of a general two people plus a LOT of stuff crammed into a small space lived for several years type smell.

I've noticed it on my clothes already so it's a bit off putting.

The place wasn't professionally cleaned by the looks of it so I have given everything a good wipe, polish and vac. Plus they did install new carpets and Lino in the lounge and kitchen before I moved in.

Any ideas how to get rid of it?

Could be the new carpets "off gassing", they often do smell a bit strange for a while, is it vauguely like a dry cleaners?

Absolutely; the foam backing on what I'd suspect is 'cheap' carpet does give off weird smell when new, it is a bit 'vinegary'. As does the aerosol glue used to fix foam back carpet down.
I am not offering advice, at most I describe what I've experienced. My advice is always the same; Talk to a professional face to face.

    Thanks for the replies.

I don't think vinegary is the right description. 'Lived in' is the only thing that springs to mind...it's not fusty either.

My house is upside down so the kitchen and lounge are upstairs. The bedroom carpet downstairs wasn't changed. The smell seems to be throughout, however it is all open plan so it could have permeated downstairs I guess if it is the new carpet.

The clothes I washed and left to dry both upstairs on the airers and downstairs on hangers all smell like it now.

It might just be a case of some serious febreezing and another good wipe down or two, plus leaving windows open for a good while I guess.

I have even been painting and that hasn't helped mask it. (yes I have permission :))

Have you tried Shake N Vac? it's a bit old school but I've used it on fusty carpets in places I've rented and it does help freshen them up.

I'm sure it'll clear soon enough ... unless that unsightly lump under the carpet is the last tenant

You could try sprinkling bicarb on the carpets, leaving it while you're out at work then vacuuming it off. That usually neutralises smells.
