Type of wood stain should I use?

I have recently aquired a solid table 4 X 2. I've sanded it down (so it's like a babies bottom). It is my intention to stain it dark so it looks right with our reproduction furniture.

I can't decide whether to use an Sadolin and brush it on almost dry, to avoid the risk of tears, or

something like Colron wood dye, and pour it on a cloth and rub in, or

use a wax dye.

Maybe if you've had experience of either, you'd offer your opinion please.

I used a rub-0n wax for an old, stripped cupboard. Was easy to do (if you're willing to put the time in) and comes up in a beautiful finish.

However, I'm not sure that I would use it on a dining table - it wouldn't take even minor abuse. Everything put on the surface leaves a slight mark, and I think you'd drive yourself crazy polishing it up.

Sorry I can't recommend what you should use, but hope my experience will help you decide what NOT to use.

    Hopr this helps.

Well yes, in a way you have helped. The thing is, when not in use, we cover our table with two covers, one being smaller than the other. We have over the years allowed the dreaded white rings to shop, hence the cloths. I have always used sadolin outside on hardwood furniture and it is great, providing you can avoid tears. The last thing I want is to be constantly having to monitor marks. I will see if anyone else posts, but thanks.

My sister tried the wax an regretted it, it was very hard to keep the table clean without taking off the wax.

Personally, I would go for a varnish with it's own stain, there's a very good range of colours too.

Call me an old far*, but I have a thing against varnish. I enjoy restoring garden furniture and if anyone has used varnish and it has blistered, it is hell to remove.
