Search Function...

Options
I agreed to post KatieL's Twitter comps while she is away, but I keep duping...

For some reason my search function doesn't seem to be working properly. I know this is a bit of a quirk of the forum, but does logging in and out or anything 'reset' it?

Sorry for the dupes... I feel quite embarrassed LOL :o

I don't think search brings up anything posted within the last half hour or so x

    This. ^^

Maybe use the search and then skim the most recent comps to make sure it hasn't been posted. xxx

there are 2 people who post twitter comps regularly. why doesnt 1 person take companies beginning A to M and the other person take companies beginning N to Z
the result would be no dupes
its pointless having two people posting these comps, espec on fridays when theres loads

With twitter comps search for the word in the URL immediately after "twitter.com"

eg. "Win Mistair blusher" - twitter.com/MistAirUK/status/441878174951948288

    search term = mistairuk

The other poster may have put "Win Mist Air Blush Kit" so searching "mistair" or "blusher" will not find it, but they must have used "mistairuk" even if they've used a slightly different URL to get to the comp.

Regarding very recently posted comps - a good rule of thumb is to skim down the first page looking at the right hand columns. Comps where "replies" are 0 and "views" are 1 have probably not yet been indexed for the search function.

I would disagree with this idea. I post the occasional twitter competition (not many, because other posters are quick on the ball), but I think that twitter competitions are different to say for example the real deal competitions that have regular posters, because you have to search around twitter to find them. There might be a good competition that someone stumbles across and does not want to post because somebody "owns" A to M on twitter and somebody else "owns" N-Z.

I think it works pretty well the way it is. We do get the occasional dupe, but it matters less with twitter comps, most of them are follow and retweet. If they post the same link, it will show that you've already retweeted. And even if you retweet two different links, I think that's unlikely to get you into trouble. You're just retweeting their comp again. They'll probably be pleased. Final reason is that a lot of twitter comps last a short time. It's more important to get them posted then worrying too much about dupes.

JessicAh in my humbles you are doing great stuff on this forum :T:T:T Don't be embarrassed by the odd dupe. Obviously, it's worth searching before posting, as you do anyway. But prolific posters dupe sometimes. Goes with the territory. We won't sack you for it :D

The search function is a pain in the butt!
When I use the search function and it comes up 'nothing found', I always click my back arrow and search again with the same details and if it's on here it shows up.
Not sure why it works this way but hey-ho!

JessicAh, You're doing a great job and don't worry about the dupes. There wasn't that many anyway.
Katie and myself have duped each other more than than that a few times in the same day.
I know someone has to request the merge and a mod has to do it but surely nobody's that bothered about it. I don't know how many dupes there are per day so I might be wrong on that front. Apologies in advance if someone's day is eaten up by requesting merges! :)
I've always said that the people that posts comps get the credit but the real stars for me are the 'behind the scenes' people that request dupes, send PM's to point out mistakes etc etc.

As for the suggestion about splitting the comps. Good suggestion but it would never work.
As Marg2k8 said she and others also post comps plus if I was sitting twiddling my thumbs waiting for an A-M comp and I saw an N-Z comp, there's no way I could resist not posting it. I'd be sitting there sweating waiting for Katie to post it. Think Katie would be the same!

BlueBella, I wish I was as graceful and harmonious as a Hummingbird but the reality is it's more headless chicken clucking at anyone that comes near me on a Friday :D
