checking on the sort code cheker, it shows NAT WEST as institution and DERBYSHIRE B S as branch

Nope it quite clearly shows that Natwest is the clearing bank, but the account is a Derbyshire Building Society account and nothing to with Nationwide!

Yes, Derbyshire is part of Nationwide.
I assume it's a legacy from before the merger - i.e. whilst Nationwide is a clearing bank (well, building society), Derbyshire wasn't, so they outsourced payments to Natwest.
And Nationwide just haven't changed it over to their own systems, but still continue to use the old Natwest account for Derbyshire payments.0 -

Nationwide merged with (took over) Derbyshire and Cheshire Societies at the same time but have kept their names for marketing purposes.0 -
