Insurance cancellation

Hello. Hope this is the right part of the forum for this.
I've just called The Policy Shop to cancel my insurance (the car is a wright-off due to mechanical failure) and they say I have to mail them the certificate back to cancel. I'm a bit miffed at not being able to cancel on the phone, but whatever.
What I'm worried about however is that their terms & conditions say that to cancel I should leave the direct debit open so that they can take the £45 cancellation fee and "any other fees applicable".
I can't be in a situation where an unknown sum of money can be removed from my bank account at any time without me knowing how much and when.
What can I do about this? Cancel the DD and state in my cover letter that any cancellation balance should be billed to me via mail? Or is that breaking the terms of my contract?
I don't know what to do. I can't leave the door open for them to just dip in to my account whenever they feel like it, but I don't know what I'm entitled to demand instead.
Any help appreciated.

Ask them to confirm the total cost to cancel before collection via dd.
In any case they need to inform you prior to collection otherwise you have the dd guarantee to call on and get an immediate refund off your Bank.
It's not unusual to return the cert before a cancellation is processed so comply and use recorded delivery.0
