Re-appeal Nationwide Credit Card decline? Building credit with Sub Prime cards?

Got accepted for Capital One and Aqua, waiting for a call from Vanquis, and Barclaycard Initial need more info
I applied with Nationwide first whom I've banked with for 8 years. Their system came up with an immediate decline message. I appealed it over the phone and the chap said oh that's odd there are no reasons for the decline, I'll look into this for you and ring you with a decision. Well today (3 days later) I get a letter stating they have considered but still declining me and there are "no specific reasons for this" - I thought that was against some terms or other? I told them over the phone there is nothing on my experian report (the decline screen had told me to look, indicating that my credit file was at fault), but that I have a confirmation letter from my council showing I'm on the electoral roll if they need that. They said no it should be fine. So what the hell is that about? Can I appeal again?
Just want to build up a good credit report by 2016 to apply for a mortgage.
Right now on my file I have 2 BT accounts, an OUSBA loan for £2,400 (now only £340 as not continuing the course), my Nationwide account, and a mobile phone account.
Thanks

Hi Crunchie,
Different lenders have different criteria regarding lending, that's the long and short of it I'm afraid... A minimal credit history can count against you as much as a bad one!
The one thing I would suggest is holding back on your attempts to get credit because several attempts at the same time can give the impression of someone desperate for credit
my advice would be use the Capital One card wisely for seven or eight months (during which time if you're smart with usage you'll likely get a credit limit increase anyway) and still feel the need to apply for a card from Nationwide then have another go
Each of the cards you have successfully applied for are designed mainly for people with a less than perfect credit rating and often referred to as 'credit builders' which means that they allow you to build a bit of "good" history for other mainstream lenders to see
All that aside, be careful with your card and don't go crazy LOL you don't want to wind up in the same boat as me

I am working out the best way to use them. I certainly won't be making any big purchases. Probably just pay petrol on them once a month and then pay it straight back. I'm applying for them all at once so my credit file has chance to recover before I apply for a mortgage in 2 years time. Although I will re-apply with Nationwide or another normal card in 12 months.
Bit of a redundant thread actually as I went right ahead and applied without waiting anyway lol! Thanks for the answers
