And most insurers refuse to cover a car that's already impounded for being driven without insurance.
    Do they?

I've never been asked if my car's impounded while applying for insurance, nor have I ever had a policy which excluded releasing an impounded car (other than with the DOC cover). So how would tehy refuse to cover it?

    Think your going to struggle.

    Did you go to court?

Also threes no grace period on having no insurance anymore, too easy for people to get out of it, if you can't demonstrate you are insured, and they consult the database to check then they take it off you there and then.

You can apply for time to pay the fine and justify with your low income.

Sounds like you were unlucky in getting a random stop on that day, I've only ever been stopped once by police in nearly thirty years of driving. It could be that vNPR camera picked up a lack of insurance.

    There never was a grace.

    Had this with a bike.

Insurance had a number wrong. Pulled for no insurance but argued the case.

Luckily as "calls are recorded for training purposes" they were able to listen back and hear me tell them about the mistake and their assurance that they would correct it.

As such they informed the police I was covered when stopped so no ticket issued (got a producer at the side of the road and allowed to carry on as the officer realised it might be something trivial).

It would be unusual for an Insurer to refuse to confirm to an Insurer you were not covered if you had made a mistake supplying the reg number as they are collecting the correct premium and would normally pay claims.

It may take a couple of calls but is fairly standard throughout the industry

I'm a bit surprised the OPs insurer hasn't auto renewed, something they all seem to try?
I'm not keen on it but it would have helped in this instance.

There was a long thread on this very subject not that long ago if you want some evidence that it does indeed happen.

wish I hadn't bothered adding this now! Going a bit off topic.

As said to Inside Insurance - It was a Sunday. The insurer denied covering the bike. We realised the issue and I said I'd called about it.

As the person on the phone couldn't confirm that but did alter it while we were talking, I kept the bike (now insured) and the officer gave me a producer to prove it was covered. They did say that if it couldn't be proven I wouldn't be covered because it was my job to check the paperwork.

Luckily, they had the recording. Since then, I've always backed stuff up with email just in case!
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
  • You could plead you case at court, hope you get a magistrate in a generous mood and decide that you are the one who is going to benefit from his/her generosity, give you a reduced fine and sympothise with you.

    Or

You could end up with a magistrate thats just not playing ball that day, is sticking by Them are the Rules we Live by you nor anybody else who passes through my court room will be treated any differently to the Rules Unless you can prove a case that you were victim of someone elses error, and give you an increased fine with court fee and charges.

i would say it your better off asking family to loan you the money and send your license off and pay the fine than increase your risk factors of paying more at court.

    1. I'm a full time mature student newly without job - I don't have the means to pay £300 now and will find it difficult to do so (I couldn't afford to run the car hence why I was selling if)

Fines aren't supposed to be easy.

Sell the car and pay the fine.

You could be worse off if you appeal.

No , I'm afraid their isn't much you can do here OP . It's tough I understand that . Just except it and learn and move on from this awful experience . You were legally stopped by the police without having valid car insurance . The court will too see it as that . You as the car driver , is responsible in making sure your vehicle is properly insured and not anyone else !

I recently was stopped by the police and charged for not having insurance. The situation was as follows:

    1. After my year long insurance had expired, I had insured the car short term, for what I thought was a month, so I could sell it. It was ACTUALLY 3 weeks not a whole month that it was insured for- I didn't know this (appreciated it's my fault for not being doubly sure)

    2. I was stopped the day after it ran out. was stopped randomly (nothing wrong with car or driving)

    3. I was asked to produce insurance documents so did so on the spot, it was then brought to my attention the insurance had ran out a week earlier than I thought it would - they saw that I was surprised and said to me they appreciate it was a clear mistake and that they didn't think at all that I had meant to drive uninsured.

They impounded the car right away and gave me 6 points a £300 fine and a £175 release fee.

I've paid the release fee and of course see it justified I take 6 points if that's a standard punishment.

However for the following reasons I wanted to ask anyone more knowledgeable in the field, if I have means to appeal the fine?

    1. I'm a full time mature student newly without job - I don't have the means to pay £300 now and will find it difficult to do so (I couldn't afford to run the car hence why I was selling if)

    2. I was stopped literally the day after it ran out as a random stop - it was a clear mistake, I was otherwise driving safely and my car was fine

    3. I understand now that if you cannot immediately provide insurance docs you have a grace period which I would have had and at least would have been able to avoid the impound fee and taxi fees

Could anyone please help me out with some insight as to whether I could appeal?

    Thanks
    Emma

Really sorry but I can't quite see what grounds you have to appeal. it is your responsibility to make sure that you are insured to drive. you took out the insurance you should know when it runs out. What would have happened if you had hit someone? who would have paid that??? it wont have been a random stop you will have been flagged up on an enpr. Dont want to sound harsh here I think you have quite a cheek for asking on how to get out of paying the fine - you were an uninsured driver who could have easily hit someone (car or person) and you need to accept responsibility.
