Starting veg seeds

Hi folks,

I have a small vege patch and as always am excited to get using it again this year.

My question is when should I start my seeds? I start them off inside to get them as big and strong as possible before going outside just after the last frost. I have no greenhouse so they have to go straight in the ground when they go out.

I don't want to plant them too soon and they grow too big in the house, take up too much space and get leggy in the process. So I need to time if so they are just right to go outside after the last frost which is supposedly early May.

So any advice would be appreciated guys.

Very good instructions are always on the package.
Only would stray from the advice if weather was unusual .
This year will sow a couple of weeks early as the weather has been so mild.

Sow some now as the weather looks set fair and the season may start early, if the weather turns for the worse or you can't get them into the ground when they are big enough then it will still be possible to sow another batch later on. Don't forget before planting them into the ground they should be hardened off for a few days, once planted they may also benefit from some protection a cloche or fleece covering until they start to romp away.

My last frost date is the end of May, so I shall be starting off the tender plants (tomatoes etc) in about mid-April. Otherwise they just get too big, and rather leggy, on my windowsills. Like you, I don't have a greenhouse.
