I'm happy to say no if offered something I don't want and have no problem doing so.0

I can believe you... I have no loyalty to Debenhams (other than the credit card I now have, but won't be used again, until I get my £5 voucher through the post, then I'll use that and probably put the card in a drawer) but I'm not sure it's as endemic as it's being made out to be.
Have you/the OP considered getting power of attorney though.. It's concerning that there are family members who don't appear to be able to care for their own finances (i.e. by saying no and sticking with it when they mean no). It can only be a slippery slope from there, and when it's too late, PoA is no longer an option....0 -
No wonder this country is going to the dogs - complaining about someone earning a bonus is the new black isnt it? How much jealousy does this world need?Dont rock the boat

:rotfl: My Mum is better at managing her money than me, she really doesn't need for me to have PoA. They actually lied to her and told her it was only a loyalty card and that to get 10% discount all she had to to was take the card, it wasn't until it arrived in the post that she realised it was a credit card. At that point she phoned them up, cancelled it and got a gift card as an apology for the sales assistant for lying to her.
I wonder why the OP or her grandmother didn't think of putting the unwanted card in a drawer or even cutting it up and throwing the bits away.
That doesn't deal with the principal that they shouldn't be pressuring people to take it in the first place. If all the elderly people put the cards that sales assistant pressured them into taking out they would just carry on doing it.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Aside from the fact that my grandmother is perfectly capable to manage her own finances, I am 24 years old and doubt I would be given PoA. She is completely "with it" and she has managed to say no every single time. I can only take her word for it when she tells me that this girl was unlike anyone she had ever come across before, was incredibly hard-going and managed to wear her down. If saying no were as simple as that, we would never hear about people being conned or scammed, nobody would ever have a direct debit to a charity they didn't want but had been talked into, nobody would ever complain about being mis-sold something. It isn't always as simple as that, and when someone is battering you with dialogue and refusing to scan your shopping through and you know you need to get back to your elderly husband before his dementia means he forgets where you are and starts trying to ring the police and family to report you missing (that's always fun to deal with) sometimes it is easier to just quickly say alright then to get her to stop talking than to continue to argue.
I really am glad that just saying no is so simple for most of you, as the thing that really bothered me the most about this entire situation was that my wonderful grandmother was left feeling like a weak, useless old lady for giving in, which she absolutely isn't. I don't believe that to be acceptable.
Unfortunately I have no news as I haven't managed to do a note to the manager yet, last week was a tricky week for our family but I will come back to update when I get a response.First home purchased 09/08/2013

Thanks, ThumbRemote. I forgot to say that (for the second time) in my last post
