Carers allowance

The situation is my dear friend is a single parent...
Until last year her son received carers allowance for her however,he contacted them because he was doing a degree at uni but would continue to live at home...but they said he would have to end his claim because his course was full time...so thats what he did.
He has now found out because he only is at Uni 10 hours a week he could actually have continued to get the carers...
he is a lovely lad and she could not manage without him...they live in a flat but he does the majority of cleaning cooking etc...
he said the money doesnt matter but i know from the outside looking in they do struggle...
also would it affect his student money.
I dont want to give them false hope until i can give them a positive answer.

Even though he only goes to Uni for 10 hours it will be classed as a full time course

Not necessarily - some uni's offer part time courses. He needs to check what the description of his course is - if it is counted by the Uni as a full time course then he can't get CA but if it is counted as part time and is under 21 hours then he may be able to.

If he's a full time student then he's ineligible to claim CA. Full time study involves far more time than just the hours spent in university.

No, if it is a full time course then he is not eligible. If it is a part time course then it needs to be under 21 hours roughly.

The actual rules are more complicated than that, but that is a simple way of looking at it.

The 21 hours doesn't come into it if the person is in fact on a full time time course.
