Yay, I have managed to get the laptop back on, it was the driver  I sat the laptop on top of a desk fan and it stayed on long enough for the driver to reinstall :D

So I played a 20 minute youtube video on full screen, core #0 had a max temp of 38 C and core #1 42 C that's ok isn't it? Unfortunately the graphics card was hotter. It was 53 C when the laptop booted into windows but went to 59 C when I turned the desk fan off. After the 20 min full screen video had finished, the max temperature was 80 C but it dropped back to the 60's when I closed full screen, that's too hot isn't it? I've not been able to check with minecraft yet because it won't load with the 2008 toshiba driver

I'm stuck again now, shall I redo the thermal paste or does it sound like the graphic card is broken?

80 is not that hot. Vista or Windows 7?

It's vista 32 bit, you were right! Time did pass quicker than I thought, Its actually 4 years I will have had it from next month.

So 80 is not too bad for watching a 20 min you tube video? What sort of range would you expect? I'm impressed my core temps are idle at 25 and 27 degree C though, they were idling at just under 80 degrees before I cleaned the fan and redid the thermal paste!

I'm curious. Did you take the laptop apart prior to using the desk fan?

Ubuntu won't have used the driver you installed on Windows, so I'm failing to see what's changed apart from the desk fan. And because you're using a desk fan just to get into Windows, this tells me it's overheating.

Hi, no I haven't taken it apart today, I just thought I would try one time to get into windows using the desk fan to try and stop it overheating.

For some reason my laptop just won't load with the basic driver, would Ubuntu use a basic driver aswell? I have had it running all day and it hasn't overheated once since the 2008 toshiba ati mobility radeon 3650 driver was installed. The core temps have not gone over 27 degrees while idle but the gpu has been idling at 69 degrees Celsius.

I just don't know whether to quit while I'm ahead and can at least browse the internet and watch youtube videos or to try again with the thermal paste. Do you think the gpu is just knackered? It seems very strange that it overheats within seconds on the basic driver.

Grrr, I just tried to check if my laptop had the latest bios but it must use the basic driver in setup because it overheated and shut down within seconds
