Howden Kitchen quote

Hi,

We are refurbishing our house and planning to put a new kitchen and bathroom. We are based in London and Howden has quoted £11,500 just for cabinets in Tewksbury Skye range, appliances worktop, sink and taps are separate which I feel is quite high.

I have taken quotes from other places which are cheaper but my partner is wishing this range only. We have opened our own trade account with them and trying to negotiate price. They are claiming that they have given us discounted trade price but Im not agreeing with that. Appreciate if someone can guide what should be the right price for following

What discount % have they applied to units and what % to the decor ends etc?

There's no getting away from the fact that you have selected a kitchen right at the top of the range which also relies on lots of extra decorative pieces. Things like curved corner cabinets cost spectacularly more than the regular ones once you've put cornice, pelmet and specially shaped kickplates in. The Tewkesbury Oak that we put into a house was 50% more than the usual ranges.

I can see lights in there (if you have an ikea nearby you will get a much better price in te lighting dept) and internal drawers and cutlery trays etc which all add to cost. This not your average Howdens shopping list or kitchen, so it won't compare to ranges like the Glendevon or Burford which are the ones we see all the time. There are ways to design a kitchen to use less units etc which helps massively on cost, but if you want a way to reduce the price, I'd remove the curved units. They add no function and kitchens look just as well designed without them.

Discounts can rely upon the relationship with the branch and the liklihood of repeat business.

  • According to them they have given discount of 70% on unit , 99% on the panels and trims and extra 10% on pull out corner units

To be fair to Howdens, they've clearly made an effort to knock the price down as they seem to have less of a margin demand on end panels etc so are giving those to you for peanuts.

70-75% on units is completely usual. Different ranges have different discounts.

How many units are in there?

I'd look at a bit of a redesign. Clearly, I haven't seen your layout but you don't have many wide units in there. If you consider that a 1000mm unit with 2x500mm doors usually costs little over half of the price of 2x500mm units then putting in really wide units suddenly becomes a really good idea!

The day I worked out how to buy kitchens cheaper was the day I spent a few hours deciphering the quote breakdown and looking at the individual prices of each unit. I then considered how valuable pull outs and curvy units really were to me.

Do you need a solid wood cutlery tray that's for £60? Do they do a cheaper one or could you buy one from elsewhere?

Last thing to do is haggle. If that is the only design and unit combination that will fit and you want it for £10k, then speak to the manager, tell them that's your price, that you're ready to buy and see what happens.

  • There are 18 units including the wine rack, thanks for your advice and I was wishing to make sure whether quoted price is exorbitantly high or within reasonable range

I fit a lot of Howdens kitchens. Tewksbury is very expensive and the curved units, as Doozergirl suggests are priced off the scale. It's the extras that they sneak in that often bump the price up.

Aerosol and activator are half the price at screwfix. The lights are also a third if the price at screwfix.

For what you have got, it's probably about right. But go back to them and say Magnets have given you a better price and you are going with them. For this level of sale, you'll suddenly find they pull the stops out.

  • Thanks Phill99, we are still negotaition hopefully we will be able to reach a happy medium :-)

Same old Howdens ,trying to con the trade into thinking they are "Trade only" .

Not having a dig at the OP and I wish them well but why do Howdens still claim to be "Trade only" when in fact they will sell to the Public?

This along with the fact that their kitchens are poorer quality than they were 5-10 years ago and their pricing structure is a joke are the reasons why I rarely deal with them now.
