I have just spoken to someone at EDF when they changed the meter they should have changed it to a Ecom meter on a like for like basis but they have just fitted a standard meter. They have also informed me that I can choose the June 2015 fix for Ecom 7 which I was told previously was not an option.
So it sounds like EDF messed up your meter exchange, and gave you duff information too.

I expect they spotted your direct heater in you living space and assumed that E7 was not suitable for your needs. No doubt they were trying to do you a favour, but failed to notice you had a storage heater elsewhere in the building. They should have at least explained what they were doing though!

You should be able to get them to change it again for no charge.

    Your options now are:

Option 1. Stick with your single rate meter. Shop around for the best single rate deal you can get. Get a timer for the hot water tank and set it to times which are convenient to you (If you have a good insulated E7 tank, it may only need to be heated once a day. If not, just set a time for morning and a time for early evening if you need a boost.) Remove the remaining storage heater(s) and replace with direct heaters of your choice (convector, oil filled, etc.)

Option 2. Get EDF back to sort out the job they messed up in the first place, and fit a two rate E7 credit meter. Shop around for the best dual rate deal you can get. No need to worry about a time for the hot water, it should be wired directly to the automatic switch in the meter. (If for some reason it isn't, then set a timer to tally up with the E7 times for your area) Install an additional storage heater in you main living space to replace the direct heater you currently have (This is important. You must have all storage heating to take advantage of E7, if you use direct heating during the day it will cost a fortune!). Learn how to set up and control your storage heaters correctly.

For additional savings, start trying to move as much of your usage to the E7 hours. This could mean taking early electric showers to make use of E7 times, or early loads of washing or tumble drying.
