Alternative to Quicken for budget planning only

I have been using Quicken on my trusted XP desktop for a very long time and now want to change computer to a Windows 8.1.

Does anyone know of alternative software I can use?

I only need it for monthly budgeting. I do not use any of the other features like linking to bank accounts etc.

Thanks

There was a free version of Microsoft Money going, which might be of use.

Alternatively you could just use a spreadsheet, either Excel (if you have MS Office) or the one in Open Office (or Libre Office) which is free.

Is GnuCash any help? It's powerful and completely free, not sure if it supports your needs

I downloaded the free version of MS Money. When I tried to add an account I got the following message.

Please select your financial institution's name from the list. If the name does not appear in the list, please select My financial institution isn't listed.

The list is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.

When I click "My financial institution isn't listed" is says
Your financial institution wasn't on the list because it doesn't yet provide online updates to Money. You can still set up your account in Money, and you can update it by typing in your transactions or, in many cases, by importing information from the financial institution's Web site. To continue setting up the account, click an account type.

Do you have to manually add the accounts?

    Thanks all

I have Quicken 2000. I will try it on Windows 8.1 when I get it or have a look at the other alternatives you mention - moneydance and msmoney and gnucash.:)

I have Quicken 2000 running on Windows 7 64 bit.
If you do install on W8, you will need to make some minor adjustments such as compatibility mode and composition.

Lastly, you can no longer register on the Intuit web site for these older versions.
As a result, Quicken will only run for a limited number of times until registration has been completed. A work around is to replace the Quicken .ini file with your existing Quicken .ini file in use by XP, which will contain the original registration details.

Nothing to stop you using the US version of Quicken (and treating dollar signs as pounds). It's compatible with W8 (no mention of 8.1).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It runs fine on Win 8.1, and there's no need to treat the dollar sign as pounds. Enable multi-currency support in the program settings before importing or creating any accounts, set the default currency to UK Pound Sterling and everything will be shown in pounds and pence.

    Deneb and macman thanks.

What would be best? Can I buy the US version on amazon.co.uk or do I have to get it through the US site? Or is there a download off the internet? I am looking at getting the 2014 version.

It's available as as CD-ROM or download from the Quicken site, haven't checked Amazon prices. But with UK shipping probably cheaper to get the download.
