Ubunta Failure

I thought I would try Ubunta, however it does not seem to like my computer monitor.
Version is ubuntu-12.04.4-desktop-i386

http://tinypic.com/r/27y3mte/8

I am booting it from a flash drive, good job I didn't install it on my hard drive.

The video card is a Radeon 6670 HD and the monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 2494HM

Any suggestions?

Definitely looks like a problem with the graphics driver...

Have you tried the latest Ubuntu? It's at version 13.10
The ATI Radion drivers should be a lot better in the latest version you should have better luck.

I think it probably needs propriety drivers to work with your graphics card.
You would need to start the desktop in "failsafe graphics mode", but I doubt that's available on the live USB?

If you wanted to take the chance you could install it, then at the GRUB menu choose 'Advanced options for Ubuntu', then choose 'Recovery Mode', then in the menu that pops up choose 'Failsafe graphics mode'

Then once you were in to a desktop, I think you go to Software Sources, and there should be a tab labeled Additional Drivers, which should offer you the video driver.

What i would do first though is to get hold of the latest version 13.10, and see if that works better on the live USB. Or even wait for 14.04 at the end of April.
You'd probably still need the fglrx driver to get the best out of your card, but the inbuilt driver should at least give you a working desktop.

I've got a radeon HD 5450 in my system. Admittedly a lower powered card, but the inbuilt radeon driver works without problems for me in Ubuntu 13.10. (mind you, it did in 12.04 as well)

ETA: I see S0litaire just snuck in before me. :D

I don't know anything about Ubuntu, but the second post here sounds like it might help... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1814871

Or try Linux Mint which has some proprietary drivers baked-in, but is otherwise Ubuntu under the covers.
