If there isnt enough left to pay the funeral then the debts will die with yoir father in law. The funeral has to be paid and if you organise the funeral you will be personally liable for that

Clearly we will have to arrange the funeral are you saying if we use the money left from is estate =£1600 the funeral costs =£ 3900 no money will be left to pay debts therefore written off .0

That is exactly what I am saying. You will get the companies trying to badger you but just send them a copy of the estate accounts and they will sooner or later leave you alone

You haven't explicitly said but I assume he also had no assets - car, house, jewellery etc ? If he did then they would need to be sold to pay the balance of the funeral and the debts.0

If you don't arrange the funeral, then the local authority will do so: you can still attend but you'll have no say in time or date.
May take some persistence in refusal, but if you are not in a position to pay for it either then that is an option.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

You advise the local authority that the estate is insolvent and aks them to arrange the funeral. they will use the £1600 to pay the costs. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
