In the first picture there is a blue valve at the bottom of the picture that appears to be in a 'closed' position (it's at right angles to the pipe).

Do you mean the one above the flexi silver pipe? That is the boiler fill loop so needs to be closed. Thanks for the input though....

One other thing to satisfy my curiosity, is that silver cylinder in the middle of a pipe a water softer filter? That particular pipe runs into the boiler....

Something i noticed today... I had my bathroom sink hot tap open fully (with a pretty lame flow rate) and then flushed the toilet next to it which pretty much stopped the water in the tap.

Should this have affected it as one is hot and the other surely fills up from the cold?

I'm so confused!
