How long to have the heating on a day?!
Options
Hello, I work from home and I can't stand being cold during the day! The room I work in is generally colder than the rest of the house and another dilemma is that it's soon to be turned Into a baby room.
We have a thermostat which we keep in this room and put right down to 11 degrees at night right before we go to bed as I don't like being hot in bed. When my partner gets up he puts the temp up to around 14 or 15 and generally takes a good 2 hours to reach this temperature. It stays at this temp but at around lunch time I start feeling nippy so I'll put up to around 18 degrees. Again this takes a couple of hours to reach. The annoying thing is ill still feel really cold throughout the day even with the temp at 18 I'll sit with 2 jumpers and a hot water bottle and it's still cold in this room! The rest of the rooms are perfectly warm!
At night I put the heating up to 18-20 degrees and this stays on for about 3-4 hours.
Is 8 hours a day too much?! And is there a reason why this room is so much colder than the rest? It's a big ish bedroom but not so big it should feel like an ice block compared to the rest!
Thanks in advance

You can put the heating on for as long as you like and whatever temperature you want.
There is no law saying you can't use your heating :rotfl:
If you can afford to pay for it use it, that's what I do.
Is your home adequately insulated and draughproofed?
Biggest difference to my comfort and costs was when I increased the loft insulation from 50mm to 300mm with some parts having 500mm because I had some left over.
I've the heating on from 8:30 till 23:00 every day, with the thermostat set to 22 deg C and my wife sometimes complains of feeling cold.0 -
Hi thanks for replying. It's not exactly like we are "strapped for cash" so to speak but i don't think we would be able to afford having the heating on constantly. I understand once baby is born it will be getting used more frequently but as it's just myself in the house during the day and I spend most of it in one room I sometimes feel like I shouldn't be heating the whole house. I do have a halogen electric heater but I've read that these eat up your electricity.
We've only been living in this house for 11 months, it's a bungalow which was renovated only recently we are the first ones to live in it since being renovated so I assume all the insulation etc would be spot on? We rent off my father in law so I feel a bit rude asking him if he's done everything correctly, which I'm sure he has. It's just strange that this one particular room is so much colder. The radiator feels like it's on full blast aswell. Bit of a strange one.0 -
Does the room get much sunlight? I have a small office, also soon to be a baby's room, that gets almost none and it's always freezing in there. We got an electric heater but it cost a fortune so we installed gas central and put a radiator in there, and we have an automatic thermostat that turns the heating on an hour before I wake up and off in the evening when that room tends to be empty. That way we don't have to remember to turn it on and off or up and down ourselves!0

Can you get into the attic?
Check that the insulation covers that bedroom.0 -
It depends on what the walls are. If its an older building it may be wooden frame and no insulation on that section. especially if that room was added to the original building.
Checking the loft insulation is also a good ides. We have a new house, when we moved in the first winter was really cold. Turned out on inspecting, the loft insulation was only around the loft entry!!!! When they fitted the insulation properly, we certainly noticed the difference.
Your landlord is just that. No matter if its family or not. So just tell him its a bit cool in that room! I'm sure he wont want hids new grandchild shivering in there!! He may not even realise.
And talking of baby, you need to keep it warm for them when they are small. We leave our heating on 24 hrs a day in winter, its on a thermostat and like you, turn it down when we go to bed....but it keeps the chill off and our kids are toasty warm. Our 2 have always kicked off blankets, (not because they are hot), so having the heating on means they dont get cold and cry.....0
