    I got it sorted, it was just that the cone wasn't properly pulled into the threaded part on the underside. It either hadn't caught properly or wasn't pulled tight enough, but dropping it and starting again went fine.

    Lesson learned; whenever I get a new car, figure out how to remove/replace the spare wheel at a time/location of my choosing ! :)
