Fraud Warning ! - Tesco Credit Card

Hi People,

I've just found out that my Tesco Credit Card online account has been hijacked ! Someone has racked up £1700 on my credit card.

I find this hard to believe as I always have my card with me and never let it out of my sight. The only times I use it is to make 2-3 purchases on well known websites and for my weekly shop. Computing is also my profession so I know all about keeping up to date on malware, anti-virus and internet security.

The first indication that your account is affected is you will receive an automated email from Tesco saying that your online password to your account has been changed. If this is not the case phone Tesco Finance up straight away.

Over the last 4 days I have received 3 emails stating my password was changed which was false. Upon logging onto my account with my usual password I found 3 fraudulent transactions (William Hill betting and some online store).

It seems a bit coincidental that this has happened in the same week as when Tesco are moving to an online statement service rather than sending them through the post.

Just keep a regular eye on your account folks !

You make payments to your card using your linked direct debit account. You however cannot make purchases.

I've just been a victim as well, coincidentally also affecting Tesco. Paypal account was accessed, he withdrew £150 from Tesco into paypal then transferred out. Also had a payment from someone else in paypal account - and he hadn't authorised it either. Paypal have sorted out - but not a nice feeling.

Feeling kind of glad they turned me down now...
  • I've got one and it was done too, about 6 weeks ago, for World of Warcraft .

Betting, yes, mobile phones, yes, these things I can understand, but why would someone want to defraud my card to the worst online game ever?!?!?!

Got sorted out really quickly though, I was really impressed with Tesco!

Thanks for posting this. I wonder how many cases of fraud will rack up unnoticed when the statements go online. I am going to request mine reverts to paper. Another scheme by Tesco to save money by not sending out statements.

Mint are doing likewise. maybe all RBS credit cards will be doing this so watch out. It's a bit naughty that they don't give you any choice in the matter.

Why should fraud jump just because the statement is online  The people that don't check statements, don't take care of their details, are the ones in trouble, regardless of how the statement is produced.
    Greetings once again Comrade AlMac:A
I partly agree with you, but it just seems to be increasing too much for it all to be due to carelessness. Some people I know who have been caught are precisely the opposite of what you describe. The crooks are clearly getting far more sophisticated with hacking, and I am also suspicious that offshoring details has compromised security.

On a lighter note, if the bets at Wiliam Hills come up, do you get the winnings back into your card account?

I for one will be happy that I don't have to put the "extra" leaflets in the re-cycling. ;)

Whilst I agree with you on the recycling front I still don't see this as a great idea for Joe Public - remember not everybody who has a credit card is as familiar with computers, online banks etc as members of this forum.

When the statements arrive in the post I think more people would give them a glance over and spot a rogue transaction than the number of people who would log on to their account and check the details. It is easy to assume that everybody is happy with logging onto online accounts.

I must admit myself to not being fully aware of how the crooks get hold of peoples details.

You can opt out of Tesco's system but have to logon to do it and you have to wait until after the system goes live in August

EGG cards have worked paperless from their inception. I'm old enough to remember when I got a hand written invoice from my water supplier.

You can spot fraud faster with an on-line system.

Are statements going through the Post Office secure - not if the documentaries showing scumbags getting jobs in the post office just to steal information are to be believed.

Perhaps Tesco should have a dedicated in shop terminal for public use, like the Nationwide building society does.
