M&S Credit card application asks for bank details for credit check?

I'm sorry if this seems obvious, or is common, but looking at the credit card application for the M&S credit card it asks near the end for your bank details (account and sort code) 'for credit checks'.
I'm confused, does this mean they want to access my bank account to check through my transactions with a fine toothcomb? Or is it a bog standard question on applications?
I don't remember on previous card applications in the past whether this to be a normal thing and to be honest it's not very clear what they want my account and sort code for? Is it just to make sure I am who I say I am so it can be cross checked with my credit history?
If anyone knows I would be very grateful

In short, they are able to check that your Sort Code and Account Number match the person who's name is on the application form and address they state they are living at.

Thank you steve2005, It's been a very long time since I have filled out a credit card application and maybe my memory is slightly hazy. Always good to know exactly what your signing up to.
Thanks again0 -

As part of credit scoring the age of your accounts is a factor. I well run current account for many years will have a positive effect on a credit card application.0
