I have recently been found fit for work after atos face to face assessment and have asked for MR and a have made a claim for jsa. I have been doing a course at college 2 hours per week Adult lit English the jc Advisor has said I have to give this up and get proof other wise I will not be deemed to be available for work.
I thought the gov encouraged these free courses. Any advice please.

Here's the government's official page. Ask the advisor to point out where he gets his information from.

You can get JSA while studying part-time if you can combine your course with a job, or are willing to give up your course for a job.
Part-time is up to under 16 hours. I don't see how they can complain about 2 hours a week. Presumably if you're offered a job you will be willing to stop the course if the hours clash?0 -
Thank you for your reply this is what I thought as a lot of people who go to college are on jsa.Study part time.StormyWeather wrote: »Here's the government's official page. Ask the advisor to point out where he gets his information from.

Are you getting confused with 'give up to take suitable employment?'
You can do a course of up to 16 hours but you cannot refuse a job if it clashes with the hours you attend college without risking a sanction.0 -
Seems daft when one idea being mooted at present is compulsory level 2 maths and English courses for those who need them or sanctions on benefits. As above - tell them you are available for interviews and/or work if such a thing comes up."'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life

I used to teach adult literacy and numeracy. There are evening, as well as daytime classes and some courses may run on Saturday mornings, too.0

So it wouldn't even get in the way of 9-5 jobs? With jobs outside of 9-5 I think most employers would be flexible for 2 hours for a literacy course.
Print off the page, take it with you for your next appointment.
I think the challenge will be trying not to sound sarcastic while asking why their advice is different to the gov's page.0 -

desision maker made a decision on my claim today is this a record only claimed on tuesday and he asked me about the course and said its fine as under 16 hours and has put notes on the system he has also awarded my jsa
Thanks for your help0 -
Seems harsh - so your college course is TWO hours per week and will give you basic literacy? Is it early/late or mid day?
If you have been told to give that up, which would actually give you a big boost to finding work, it doesn't seem right.
The rules are you have to be willing to give up study to take up work BUT two hours a week??? What I am trying to get at is is it at an awkward time so it may block your job chances. (I am just guessing at their thought process here).
Just seen this;
WHO TOLD YOU TO GIVE THAT UP???? On a personal level I would rather like to tell then to shove something overheated up an opening that shouldn't be revealed ;-)richard9991 wrote: »The course I am doing is in the evening.

It was jcp advisor but when the BDC rang me to ask about it they awarded my jsa there and then and said as long as it is less than 16 hours and doesn't interfere with job search etc they are not interestedSeems harsh - so your college course is TWO hours per week and will give you basic literacy?
