Anti-virus and firewall

Hi
I have a new laptop which had Norton anti virus pre-installed on it. However I never activated this product but instead installed Avast Free.
I am wondering now if I should have un-installed Norton before installing Avast.
Also, I find that Windows firewall is often turned off. Am I right in thinking that Avast Free does not include a firewall and that Windows firewall should be turned on?
I wonder if Norton is interfering here somehow?
I am running windows 8

norton may be interfering, run the removal tool:-

ensure windows firewall is set on after the reboot......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Hello,
It is not recommended to use more than one security products together on a computer. They may conflict each other cause problems.
As the other user suggested, you can use the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall the Norton product.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!

Many thanks both.
I have done as you suggested and the windows firewall came back on. I didn't un-install Norton when I first got the laptop, I thought it was enough to just not activate it.
I installed Avast as I have used it for some time and been happy with it. Should I un-install Avast and re-install it now Norton has been removed?
Thanks for your help0 -
if you ran the norton removal tool, it should be suffice. Just monitor for any issues, and as a last resort only uninstall/reinstall avast if needed

Thanks GunJack
Yes I un-installed Norton and then ran the Norton removal tool. I was encouraged to see the windows firewall had come back on.
Am I right to think that Windows Defender on Windows 8 computer should be turned off whilst using Avast Free? I believe Windows Defender on 8 is different to previous versions.0 -
Windows defender should auto disable if another virus programme is present.
i use windows 8.1 and have never seen it active on there when other software is used0 -
Thanks for that, dturtill0
