Dilemma- Caught between switching-Help

When my existing Scottish Power Contract ended I signed up to a deal with EDF.

Scottish Power then rang me offering a better deal, I explained I had just agreed to switch to EDF but they said they could stop that happening and I could stay with them.

They set their own agreement up but the EDF deal has gone through too.

EDF have taken their first payment, SP have taken their last on the old contract.

Have tried ringing and can't get through to anyone, just sitting in queues for hours.

Can I write a letter to SP to cancel as they did not prevent the EDF Contract as agreed and am I likely to have to pay penalties?

Help!

I now appear to have two contracts - I'm guessing this means somewhere along the line I will have to pay penalties. I felt under pressure with the caller from SP and am now bitterly regretting agreeing to the deal

  • Did the Scottish Power agent use the words "Cancel the contract"?

S.W.I.M. used to perform this job for an energy supplier (retentions). The only way a transfer can be cancelled is during the cooling off period, usually two weeks. Normally, the losing supplier won't hear anything during this two weeks. The retentions team simply put through second request, things are rarely "cancelled".

I'd be surprised if the agent said "we'll cancel the contract with edf", as this would leave them open to losing their job. Something like "We'll handle everything for you" is normally sufficient.

Unless things have changed drastically in the last 5 years, these (or any other) departments can never offer anything that isn't available on a price comparison site.

It used to be the case that you could offer 100 quid or so off the bill after a year as an inducement to return, on top of all other DD/DF discounts. However, at the time it was only 1 company doing this (not SP) and I doubt it continues.

Most of the time, a vague promise to "take care of everything" and lowering the DD was enough to hoodwink a lot of people.
