I have a Buffalo HD LBU2 external hard drive and is is playing up. When I plug it into my computer the light comes on but the computer does not see it. I have tried it on my Dell and Macbook but no joy. Any ideas anyone?

What you have is a hard drive mounted within a USB caddy, and it has components external to the HD itself to enable the USB interface. You need to establish if these have failed.
If you put your ear to it, can you hear the drive whirring? If so -
Break out your tools, open up the case, extract the HD and install it in your (desktop) PC as a secondary drive. There's guides on how to do this all over YouTube and other areas of the interweb.
If it still won't see it, then the HD is likely to have failed.0 -

Thanks. I will have a listen to see if it is whirring. I presume it is possible to fit it into an external hard drive caddy. I actually know how to do that myself.0 -
Yes, that would work too, if you have an empty caddy that you know is working...0
