As dusk falls in one of South-east Asia's most thrilling cities, the lofty skyline is lit up in neon. Stay at the Marina Mandarin Singapore and you have a front-row view. Located in the shopping and entertainment hub of Marina Bay, this hotel has a spa, outdoor mineral-water pool, and restaurants specialising in sushi and dim sum. Enter this month's Where Are You? competition and you could win a five-night holiday for two here. The prize includes accommodation in a premier room with breakfast, return flights to Singapore with Qatar Airways and transfers. The holiday must be taken by 30 December 2014; exclusions may apply during high season - particularly January, July, August, September and December - and other special events taking place locally. For more details, visit www.meritushotels.com and www.qatarairways.com or call +65 6845 1000 and 0333 320 2454
Identify the city where the photograph on page 184 of the April 2014 issue was taken, and send in your entry to arrive by 31 April 2014. All correct entries will also be included in the Grand Prize draw at the end of the current competition period (1 October 2013-30 September 2014).

Clue: Warning: may contain nuts. Peanuts, to be exact. The farm in the picture helps to make the country in which it is located one of the world's top 10 producers. The fact that a global leader in the production of anything is still using pairs of yoked oxen rather than mechanised, tractor-drawn ploughs to till the soil is pretty extraordinary; and in a land where the political progress of recent years has opened up new economic possibilities, this kind of scene could soon be a thing of the past. But it isn't a passion for old school agriculture that brings most people to these parts. In fact, visitors are generally too busy gazing upwards to pay much attention to the earth beneath their feet. Raise your eyes from the field and you'll see fantastical pagodas rising from the table-flat landscape like medieval rockets ready for lift-off. They are the defining feature of a nearby ancient city and the plains that surround it. Countless temples were built here between the 11th and 13th centuries, and more than 2,000 are still in place. So if you're about beautiful old buildings, you'll love it here. Where are you?

To enter, identify the city and country on page 184 where the photograph was taken. Correct answers will be placed in a random prize-draw.

  • Hi,

I may be wrong but I think the answer may be Bagan, Myanmar:

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/12/05/temple-hopping-in-the-paradise-of-bagan-burma.html
"more than 2,200 scattered temples and pagodas"
"After half a century of rule by a military junta that shunned the outside world, Burma’s elections in 2012, plus a recent lifting of international sanctions, have paved the way for long-sought democracy"
"the area was once host to between 4,000 and 10,000 temples built between the 11th and 13th centuries"
" in a peanut field a few miles away"
2018 wins: Aspinal of London jewellery box, Boudavida gym outfit, HP Pavilion laptop, The List party tickets, All Points East festival tickets, Kiehls moisturiser, By Terry cc serum, Nars Liquid Bronzer, Benefit highlighter, Nars illuminator, Fresh advanced lip trio set, Cetaphil sample set, signed copy of My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent

Burma (as the country) fits the criteria:

In the top 10 peanut producers
Government reform in 2011 means things are changing
Pagodas and temples abound since the 11th century

So if it's an ancient city I'm guessing Bagan. From Wikipedia "During the kingdom's height between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2200 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day"

Of course, I've not seen the picture...

    Sorry to bump.

I went and had a look at the picture this afternoon. It's just a photo of some farmers in a peanut field, using oxen to plough. So it's no more helpful than the description in the original post, in my opinion. I would agree with Bagan in Burma based on the other posts.

Been to both. You need deep pockets to enjoy Singapore. Even on a budget. Funny the only cheap thing we found was taxi's.
Winnings to date (from Sep 2013) = £10400
