Fleas in rented property

  • Dear John,

It takes a few weeks to sort out (flea life cycle). The best thing is to get professional pest controllers in. They will resolve it. The Council often does this at the most reasonable rate. Mine charged £50.00, then send the bill to the Landlord.

I had this experience with my Landlord, who left behind hundreds of fleas from their pets. I got 140 bites. It was absolutely gross and very upsetting. You really have my sympathy on this one.

It's not necessary to get pest-control in if you're using a suitable and effective product which includes an IGH (insect growth regulator) like Johnsons 4Fleas Household Spray.

If you have kids and don't want to be using too many chemicals, you could try food grade diatomaceous earth. Once it's down, it won't harm people but it cuts little creepy things so they dehydrate and die. I haven't used it for fleas but I know people who have, and it successfully got rid of carpet beetles and moths for us... oh and slugs (inside ones). Yeah we've had pretty much everything, just waiting for the fleas to make their appearance really!
  • Pest controllers did it all for me in 20 minutes. They use stronger stuff than you can buy in shops. The normal shop sprays didn't work properly for me.

By the way, if it was in America, I am sure you could get some proper help, reimbursement or damages. Here - tenants are too scared to say anything. I'm amazed people think its even the Tenant's responsibility (hey ho).

Absolutely, my American friends are horrified at how Brits are treated as tenants, the whole system needs a radical overhaul
Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool

  • Hi there, Do you know who lived in the property before you? Was it the landlord or other tenants?

Note: this is one reason I am so against tenants with dogs. The dog-owner does not suffer (the fleas prefer the dog), but if the next tenant has no dog the fleas go for the tenant..

Do0gs don't generally get fleas, it's cats that bring them in. Any sensible owner would use Frontline as a precaution, which costs less than £20 online.

Of course he smells of dog,

That is probably because you are feeding them on well known branded tinned food from the supermarket, which only contains 4% meat and the other 96% is junk.

I feed mine on animal mince (Albion Foods) and the trays of food you get from specialist pet shops. My dog does not smell doggy, nor does she have a greasy coat nor doggy breath. But then it's just the same with humans, if you lived on a diet of fizzy drinks and chocolate bars, then you'd not be in so great a shape.

Yes, agree, I'm afraid tenants are treated here with complete contempt (just look at this Forum for basic attitude of LLs). A mediaeval serf probably had more rights, or at least they haven't changed much.

Just thought I would update as its been a few weeks, still see fleas even after all this time, only 3 - 4 a day mainly in just one room now, still hoover every day and spray now and again, not sure how long this will go on for, as I say no animals to keep the problem going so just assume that there were a lot of eggs and its just taking this time for them to hatch slowly, hopefully not too long to go now before all gone. Oh and dont get me started on slugs in the house.
