Dog nail clippers which would you recommend

Hi, I was wondering which type of nail clippers to buy. I have never used any nail clippers on my dogs. Our first dog was a rescue and had no dew claws and the walks kept his claws in check coupled with his visits to the groomer. Our 2 dogs we have now are both rescues and both have dew claws which I think I need to have a go at myself. I ask the groomer to do them when they visit but I think she only did one of them as they are much longer on one side. I'm not sure if she only managed to do one and then the dogs started wriggling (I will ask next time we go). I do know you have to be very careful not to cut too much off so I thought maybe some with a guard. If they do wriggle I thought I could desensitise them. All thoughts/advice greatly appreciated.

I recently bought these as they have good reviews online
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nail-Clipper-Lrg-Orange-Handle/dp/B000UGEVDQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1388438943&sr=8-2&keywords=millers+forge+clipper+large
They do a regular size if you don't have large dogs.
Kikopup does some good videos teaching you how to clip nails

I use the same style as krlyr recommends, I tried pretty much every type going and my dogs nails are just too thick and they would break with just a few uses. I've had the current ones for almost three years and they still work well.0

Thanks guys, some good advice there. Might need to modify the training as Bailey is diabetic and can't have treats, causes a few problems as he doesn't get excited for anything other than food0

Hi rising from the ashes, do these have a guard so that you can't take too much off? Without a guard I have worries that I may do some damage with my squirming dog
. Ooops.

I don't think any clippers will have a guard that will prevent you cutting the quick. The bonus of the style I have is that, as per Kikopup's video, you can use it to trim shavings off the nail to reduce its length without cutting directly across the nail (and risking cutting the quick), which you wouldn't be able to so easily with the guillotine style.
You can get clippers with a built in torch that will shine through the nail to show the quick, not sure if they work with darker nails. Otherwise, just clip them off slowly, a little bit each day - you'll be less likely to catch the quick, and trimming them back supposedly makes the quick recede too.0 -
I have some Mikki brand, which are very similar to the ones in the Amazon link above. They were from Pets at Home and I've had them for over 15 years.
My dogs are only cavaliers, but they were fine for my big boy, who was springer sized and had very tough nails.
Unless your dog has black nails, it is easy to see the blood vessel and avoid it. however, over the years I have twice caught blood vessels, but the bleeding soon stopped and the dog didn't seem to feel any pain.0
