I have a question about heating water

This question has probably been debated on this forum before so I apologise.

We heat water for showering etc every day by turning the boiler on, heating the tank of water then turning the water switch off. I have heard from a friend that this is the most expensive way of heating water and that I should leave it on constant. Is this really so? It is only my daughter and I and we shower every day (through a pump system - not an electric shower) and wash up say once or twice a day.
I would be grateful for anyone's advice.
Thank you.

The longer it's on, the more it costs. But a properly lagged cylinder will lose minimal heat throughout the day.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The cylinder is well lagged I think. So are you saying that the way we are heating the water is the cheapest, i.e. only turning it on when we need it? Thank you.
