how does he show evidence he actually paid the PPI?
the last loan finished 2 yrs ago and has since moved in with me and is unsure if he has any paperwork.
as for a reason for a refund, is... i believed the taking out PPI would benefit me incase i was unable to make a payment. a valid reason??

If he cannot find the original paperwork the lenders might still have some information they can send him, or you can submit a SAR for anything older than six years.
Bank statements showing the loan direct debits are proof of payment, see if you can get hold of the first and the last one for each loan.
As for reasons that ppi could have been mis-sold, I don't think the one you mention is strong enough.

That would be no use in establishing if PPI was paid, it only proves the loan was paid.

he is ringing first as he cant remember if he had PPI with each loan, hopefully the will be able to tell him either way.

I'm not sure that's of much use.
I'm no expert on this, - to me the journey has just begun -but I can confirm that I've been directly told by MBNA over the phone that I didn't ever have any PPI on any of their products that I've had with them, - that's credit cards and loans.

Only for a NWNF PPI guy to unearth that I *did* actually have PPI on a MBNA loan in 1999 :undecided

    So, write is my advice.

I was in the same circumstances.
I just rang each creditor. Gave name, address, date of birth and account number and asked.

Majority said PPI had been sold
I then asked if I could complain against this and each of them sent me a form.

All calls were done 4th and 5th of January.
Most forms were with me by the end of January.
    Most refunds end February.

Also every single one of them I didn't have paperwork and they were all before 2005. I did have account numbers and contact numbers thanks to my online DMP through Stepchange.
    31st December 2004 - Debt was £128,596.72
    1st October 2016 - Debt Free

That has given us a glimmer of hope.
