I'd don't know the area that well but I have family in Marlow and they were saying how much cheaper Stokenchurch is, the other place I thought of was Flackwell Heath.

To me Stokenchurch is actually around the a40 (lots of side roads so you are not "actually on it".
Flackwell is more off of it-if you see what I mean. Also would you have to go onto through Wycombe to get to Marlow. Not a good idea in the rush hour.

Wycombe to Marlow is a PITA around 7.30am onwards and around 5.30-6.30pm at Handy Cross. And if I were you I woudn't venture on Handy Cross on your first attempt during rush hour, it takes a couple of tries before you know which lanes you are meant to go in.

Marlow is expensive to live in, but the river is lovely in the summer (not so much at the moment ;))

Wycombe is fine, obviously there are good and bad areas, but it depends what you are looking for. A house or a flat will have massive price ranges depending on location.

    I assume William Borlase?

In Wycombe, depending on your budget. It is at the top of Marlow Hill for starters so you don't have to go through town. Straight onto the A404 to Marlow.

    Wokingham (but not that cheap).
Reading - avoid Whitley Wood (sorry if you live there).

    Niether go through Wycombe

You do not need to go anywhere near Wycombe to get to Marlow from Flackwell heath they are both on the same side of the M40 and there are OK back roads to get you onto the A4155.

Stokenchurch you can go back roads(B482) but the normal fast route would be M40 J5 A404 hitting Handy Cross again not through Wycombe

I live in Marlow and my son goes to the grammar school. Where to live on a budget depends on what else you want out of life. All the suggestions made so far ring true, there are parts of High Wycombe and Reading that will be affordable to many budgets. How far are you willing to commute? if you live in Reading, driving through Henley to Marlow is hard work!

I would look at Maidenhead and it's surrounding villages according to affordability. It is an easy commute, has good rail links to London, and the practicalities (not aesthetics) of Slough are within easy reach, I mean out of town megastores etc.

Have you got children of school age? That will make a difference, Bucks has the grammar schools (like your job) however, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire do not! Marlow is expensive because it is picturesque, and has fantastic schools ( both grammar and upper schools) and is still easy reach of London, motorways and Heathrow. A lot of pilots based at Heathrow seem to live around here!

I agree in general with you but Berkshire has plenty of Grammar Schools! Slough has three within a couple of miles of each other and a fourth that is not physically in Berks but has a catchment area within it.
