Sony DVD Recorder problem

I have a Sony HXD890 recorder with Freeview and 160Gb Hard Disc.
From time to time I have started having problems with the HDD playback of a couple of recorded TV programmes where halfway through the programme the pitch of the audio drops significantly but without any discernible reduction in audio or picture speed and with both remaining in sync.
Re-starting, fast forwarding/reversing or switching the recorder off and on doesn't clear it. Maybe purely coincidence but so far it has only happened when the recording has been made via the timer function rather than recording using the Electronic Programme Guide.
Anyone got any ideas or does it sound like a HDD/machine replacement job.

Might be a good idea to have a look on the AVForums.com forum, when I thought mine had died it turned out to be a common problem with the way the EPG was transmitted which was fixed after a day or two. It's not the same problem at all, but the guys on that forum were all over the problem and how to fix it. Not at all a "well, just buy a new one" kind of place, and lots of people with a deep technical knowledge of that product and similar ones.0
