iPhone - smartphone insurance

Just bought a replacement iPhone 4s for my daughter from Ebay. I have discovered that it is impossible to get it insured. I have tried numerous insurers. Some state quite clearly that they will not cover phones bought from 'auction' sites, or that phones must have a valid proof of purchase from a VAT registered supplier/shop etc. Also another popular stipulation is that the phone must be under 12 months old.
Buyers beware - although I guess on the bright side this could be a good argument for haggling the cost of a used phone down if you are buying privately?
