Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 - Android 4.0.4

I've just bought a second hand Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 model # GT-P5100 (bought new June 13 from Amazon) that has Android 4.0.4 on it on re-initialisation.
I thought this would upgrade to a newer version (it did on another SGT2 I had) - when I go to update it says "No update available" - why is this? Shouldn't it be getting 4.2?
I really doubt this tab has been rooted - but how would I tell? Would anything else cause it not to update?
Thanks, Roy

A new out of the box tablet generally won't be rooted...you can easily tell by installing a app off the play store which will check for you.
I thought that the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 had an update only certain versions/countries..0 -
Only certain versions of the tab does sound ominous - the SGT2 I had before was NOT the 3G version so that might account for it.
I wonder does Samsung have a Live Chat Support facility?

Update either OTA or try Kies .
Its the phones original vendor that updates the firmware .
OTA may fail on rooted but Kies should not .0 -
I've got GTP5100 Tab2 10.1" with 3g and it hasn't received the update either, using over the air or KIES. I seems that Samsung have given up on updating this 3G version of the Tab2 unfortunately. Some countries started to get the update to Jellybean but I haven't seen any mention of those in the UK getting it other than Vodafone supplied one (link) unless you manually flast the device which I'd rather not do.
So, for the time being you're stuck with 4.04 but having had Jellybean on other devices I don't really know what features are missing that I can't live without on 4.04

Android 4.2 has some additional features but mostly these are inconsequential.
One thing is the snapshot button will be lost, replaced by the key combination of power button and volume pressed at the same time.
But I wonder if 4.2 (or 4.1) would allow the taskbar to be hidden so that apps could go full screen? Or is there some other way of doing this?
Thanks
