Holiday Cancellation

Hi
My daugter and her boyfriend have an holiday to Turkey booked, and the final payment is due tomorrow the 2nd July. Her boyfriend who has a German passport has now told her he has phoned the German Passport Office and his passport will probably not be returned in time for the holiday.
Can anyone tell me how they go about cancelling and if its only the deposit they will loose?

They'll lose whatever amount the contract says they'll lose, which may well be more than the deposit amount if you cancel at this late stage.

There would not seem to be much "probably" about not getting the passport back in time when they are leaving tomorrow.

Normally only the deposit is lost if you cancel before the final payment is due - or fail to pay the final payment - it's after that that higher charges come in.

But check your own T&C in case they are different.

I echo the other posts, check what the conditions of booking shows about cancellation charges as every company varies. Even though the last payment is not due until tomorrow they may still have to pay some of that as cancellation charges, my last holiday was something like 75% of total holiday cost lost if cancelled within 8 weeks of departure date. Is there any chance at all of this being covered by insurance?

No insurance is going to cover a numpty situation like failing to get a passport in time.
  • Dumb question , but is Turkey in the EU yet?

I thought that as long as you had some kind of valid photo ID, you didn't need a passport to travel in the EU, if you are an EU citizen?
Or has that all changed now with the terroism issues?

Or was that just something between Ireland and UK? The valid ID and not the terroism thing......

I love that word Numpty- not heard it for a very long time!

Final payment is usually due around 4 weeks prior to travel date. What is travel date? Can he pay to have his passport application processed and delivered express/priority? Maybe he no longer wants to go, what about a name change and take someone else? They may loose 50% to 100% of cost if cancelling at this stage.

Special dispensation can be applied for in certain circumstances via a form of indemnity within the EU, Turkey is not yet a member of the EU.
