Negative Amex Rewards Points

in Credit cards
Hi all,
I recently signed up for the Amex Gold to make a big purchase and get the extra reward points bonus for signing up.
I have since had to return the item as it was faulty. This has now put me in to negative reward point balance. I used the points to get an Amazon voucher.
I bought a replacement item on another credit card.
I intend cancelling the card soon as I only got it for the bonus.
What do I do? I am out of the bonus period so I will have to spend a LOT on the card to make it up.
When i cancel do you think they will ask me to repay the vouchers?
Cheers

I believe that the charge is something like 1.25p per point that you have to pay back.0 -

In that case, he keeps it open and never uses it, or just a nominal transaction every year to keep it open?0 -

The gold has a £125 annual fee after the first year though, thats the problem.0 -
If you are saying that the 20000 points bonus was debited when you refunded that particular item, then just spend up to £2000 again and ask for the bonus to be manually credited - which will bring you back to approx 0 points.0

They didn't put the bonus back on the account. I am -4000ish because the spend was charged in Ireland (transacted in GBP) so it technically was an overseas spend.
So I have to now spend about 4000GBP locally which is MENTAL.
I have had a pretty through look through the T and C and there is nothing there about closing account and negative reward points. Anyone have any ideas? I am happy to pay 1.25pence per point but really there is nothing in the terms about this.

You need to ask them to put the bonus back0

why would i do that? It will just make my position worse...0

I did via their email, they said I had to spend but I did not push the T and Cs not stating anything.
Thanks though0 -
I don't understand what you are trying to say.
Once you have spent £2000, then you are entitled to the 20000 points.
You spent £2000 which earned double points, i.e. 4000 points, plus the 20000 bonus = 24000 points.
Then you used 20000 points for a voucher, leaving 4000 points.
Then you refunded the £2000 transaction, resulting in 24000 points being deducted. This leaves you with -20000 points. Your current spend is now £0, and you need to spend £2000 to earn the bonus.
Now if you spend £2000 earning single points, you will get 2000 points plus the 20000 bonus. This is a total of 22000. Added to your current balance of -20000, this leaves you with 2000.
I cannot see where spending £4000 comes into it0
