Hertz another option, same idea as Zipcar, although their prices have risen recently.

Not ideal in London traffic but I got a baby trailer for my bike when my second child arrived, before that I used a baby seat on the bike. W lived in a rural village at that time and it was a five mile round trip to the shops. Gawd I was fit back then, I could haul two squabbling toddlers and a full weeks worth of shopping up the relentless incline that was the route home. I also used our scrappy public transport and cadged a lot of lifts. When we moved to a bigger town I walked a lot and used the buses. My OH came home every third weekend at that point so for family days out we either hired a car for the weekend or took taxis, it still worked out cheaper than buying a car. We did eventually get one when OH got a job back home though but only because he would have spent three hours getting to work by public transport, the car takes 50 minutes.

this thread is confusing me. Surely you don't need a car if you live in London suburb whilst your wife is on maternity leave especially if your eldest is already at school or will be soon. I can understand if you were in the middle of the country, but in the capital?

If she returns to work, then it might be another matter depending on when she works, location of the babysitter/nursery and school.

I do feel though that your OH just wants the luxury of one rather than thinking of whether you can afford it or not whilst she is on maternity leave.

I can't drive, so my children have to walk everywhere or catch buses, trains! They love it, as did I growing up in a car less family!! It's not the end of the world to not have a car! unless it's really needed! I'm lucky where I live, the shops are less than a minute away, as are the drs, beaches and anything else I need! I work less than 10 mins away from my home, and the children's school is 10 mins away too! And for the big shop mr tesco delivers for £4 a fortnight ;) so even if I could drive I wouldn't bother!! Day trips we use public transport, or coach day trips to places :)

We didn't have one until our third was 9 months, once the eldest started school it was so much easier for parties etc

    We'd have coped without though
