child benefit for high earners

Please avoid my ignorance but I thought this will be taken care by my company but recently someone said its down to individual's responsibility to get the child benefit stopped.

My details are :

I got my salary increment on 3rd January from 63k to 65k and at that time I was getting child benefit for my only son(£80 something per month).
I took maternity leave on 24th June,2013 for the birth of my second child for a year so planning to go back to work in July this year. I was paid 90% of salary for first six weeks and statuary around £135 per week thereafter.

Could someone please advise how can I calculate the amount I need to pay back to HMRC ? I am so naive in all these and don't want to commit any fraud whatsoever.

thanks,
Sam

You need to work out what your income is in each tax year. If over £50k you need to do a tax return or give up child ben. Sounds like your 2012/13 income was over £50k, if so you're way past the deadline, you should have done a tax return by 31 Jan 2014. You'll have to tell them and there'll be a penalty. They should have wrote to you a year ago at least to tell you. For 2012/13 if your income was £60k plus you'll need to pay back all the child ben you received between Jan 7 and Apr 5, ie about 13 weeks worth.

Sounds like your income this tax year will be under £50k, if so you won't need to pay back any child ben since Apr 6.
