You can train cats to use the toilet - its takes a little while but is doable - then no mess at all!
What!? Haha, that is just strange!

Because the council have said that I am not allowed to. Shame really, but its not for me to moan about.0 -
Not recommending a particular product (as I've not used any) but just to show what can be done!!!

but it does deny them a natural instinct to cover.
Cats given the choice will normally chose litter or outside.
There is a bit of an ethical question of whether any stress they suffer from the denial of instinct is acceptable. We started with our clicker trained cats and they picked it up quickly but never chose it over other options. Additionally they , I believe showed things I was interpreting as signs of stress. It was an easy decision not to persue. I know quite a few loo trained cats, and of those I think some show signs of stress despite their owners best attention to other welfare. But that is my interpretation and I am not a cat behaviourist. I just feel for me and my cats the risk of it being stressful is not worth it being something I care to persue. I like litter for other reasons too, so really for me a litter tray is win win.
Cats who teach the selves otoh like tiglaths are, well......super cats and obviously making a free choice, I think that's pretty wonderful, and just like atypical people, I think its great cats can adapt and be allowed to do so.0 -
Our litter tray is in the bath. Obviously means cleaning the bath when getting in it, but it's on a mat as well so it's not as minging as it may first seen (and it's easy to clean with the shower and products.
Cats chose it. I had 5 litter boxes at one point (3 cats) and one still kept going in the bath so it was the easiest solution all round!0 -
My parents have 2 cats, no cat flap and no litter tray and they have no problems. The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0

Can't you just put the old door (with cat flap) back up again and store the new one?0 -
I have one in my small downstairs loo, as my oldest cat never goes upstairs, there is one in the spare room too though. One of my young boys uses the toilet from time to time (taught himself) and cries to be let out about 1000 times a day, but it's to play with the local cats, not for the toilet (I need a cat flap!). I don't think it's fair to expect your cat to ask to be let out all the time for the toilet, what happens when you go out?0

I would imagine there's a reason for the door being replaced ... they're not going to do it simply for the sake of doing it:(
Wanttobe ...... I'd personally find a spot for a tray, I'm not a fan of cats not having one indoors (even if they go out to pee) - what happens when the weathers awful - I know I wouldn't want to go out there to 'go'
Also, it's really useful for health reasons to know their toilet habits as you can often pick things like cystitis a lot quicker from the litter tray .....
I've just managed to squeeze Archie's into the space between the wall and the toilet in my ensuite (which isn't big!) - the toilet sort of curves over it but he seems fine with it there
The other alternative was the shower tray - which is where it would've had to go if he wouldn't have used it next to the looGrocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I had my last cat for 20 yrs and didn't have either a cat flap or a litter tray, both her and the boys i have now mew at the door or scratch.
To be fair though with dh's shifts they can go out late at night and early morning.
Also with the boys they are pretty regular only had 1 peeing accident so far.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0
