Motor Insurance 'declined' by Hastings Direct

Hi there,

I received a quote for car insurance through a price comparison website from Hastings Direct. I called them up to purchase the quote, however was told that I had failed a driver check and they were unable to insure me. Does this mean I have been declined insurance or they are just unable to insure me (possibly due to my age as I'm only 19). When asked on future quote searches 'Have you or any drivers ever had an insurance policy declined, cancelled, voided or had special terms imposed?' do I need to tick yes?

I've had a good look through Google but can't seem to find much of an answer.

Thanks

they probably dont underwrite insurance for 19 year olds

i don't think you need to declare it as they can only cancel, void etc after you have bought a policy before that its either the price the system quote is too high or they dont want your business

I agree - they cannot cancel a policy you have not purchased.
They have the right not to offer you or anybody else a policy.
  • If it was due to your age then surely they wouldn't have given you a quote in the first place (unless you put a different age down for the quote).

It's more likely that they've run a couple of background checks and something doesn't match up (does your credit record show you at your current address? That's a common one).

I don't see why you should have to declare it in future, but read the question carefully each time, they often word it slightly differently.
  • Hastings are dodgy... They offer really low quotes but if there is the slightest mistake anywhere will cancel your cover when you try to make a claim. In fact sometimes they will just randomly decide to cancel it after noticing you playing with something like your occupation, as MSE suggests you do, on a comparison site. That's a disaster as then you do have to tick that "had a policy cancelled" box.
