Is there a lack of low paid jobs across the country?

I was reading an article in the newspaper yesterday from a UKIP MEP candidate, who said about a lack of low paid jobs / manual jobs in Northern Ireland and that it was damn near impossible to get one while there was an over supply of good paying jobs, being UKIP this was put down to immigrants, but that's not point I am getting at I am wondering if this is the same problem right across the UK?
What the guy said in my experience is 100% correct, I could apply for 1 job per week on average, there are simply little to no low paid jobs advertised, the well paying jobs out number minimum wage jobs by about 10/1, perhaps companies don't need to advertise for these vacancies but I know myself I've sent out enough speculative letters with no replies, perhaps these jobs just don't exist, perhaps UKIP was correct on the migrant statement?

Depends. Are you are talking about permanent or temporary?
When I was a student in the North West of England, I had no problems obtaining a low-paid factory / Warehouse job for evenings and summer holidays.
After university I also didn't have any issues finding a low paid job in Yorkshire to put me on until I found a better paid job.
I recently had a friend get dismissed from one job and found an immediate Full time / permanent Warehouse job to start the following from being dismissed. That is also in Yorkshire.0 -

I am talking permanent, you'd think these type of jobs would be 10 a penny but around here no. Teachers, nurses, managers etc them type of jobs are 10 a penny0 -
Well nurses and doctors are specialised, so there well pretty much always be jobs for those professions. Though never say never with ever increasing budget cuts and totally misguided fools in the NHS management system, sadly even Nurses, doctors, paramedics are no longer safe

As for low paid jobs - In Yorkshire there are still plenty of low paid permanent jobs. I just drove past two warehouses with a banner saying "recruiting now" - TK Maxx, Some random warehouse I have never heard off, and I think NEXT (though I couldn't see correctly) I believe even my current employer is recruiting for pickers due to massive orders in the Aerospace sector.
Although lots of Warehouse / Factory type jobs tend to be advertised via the evil scourge of Recruitment Agencies
One or two Agencies are rather professional, but sadly the majority are pure evil, money pinching, sadistic parasites.0 -
Train to be a nurse then, problem solved. You get a better wage and the employer fills a vacant position.
My mother actually had to do that believe it or not, took her 5 years study or so with the OU, the difference between studying for a nurse or studying IT like I am doing is that her 5 years were on the job training.0 -

Erm no, there are loads of jobs at NWMWe’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
And lots that pay 2 x the NMW and a lot more..and loads more who 'pay above NMW',,, but only by a few pence!
So whats the point of the OP's question again???We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
...and not forgetting those that are illegally paid below NMW.0
