Compulsory Auto renewal?

To be fair, auto renewal is probably a good thing for those of an absent minded nature, or for those who like to deal with a certain insurer.
Its the misselling by using the old politicians trick of using a shred of truth and then tacking on the rest of the scaremongering sales ploy which annoys.
This year i didn't receive renewal documents before the auto renewal time was almost up, so i was already mentally changing insurer when i started the research, a saving of £200 over both cars was an added bonus.
As mentioned above, if they go about extracting money from your wallet by slightly underhand, IMO, methods, what hope in the event of a claim.
Its a dog eat dog country now and getting worse year on year.0 -

I agree. If auto-renewal wasn't the norm, I'm pretty confident there would be lots of threads here along the lines of, 'I got stopped by the police today for not having insurance after my stupid insurance company let it lapse, surely they should have renewed it as they know I have to have insurance...'
Auto-renewal doesn't bother me. Each year I get a letter with the next year's quote and a statement that they will auto-renew unless I tell them otherwise. I then find the best new quote I can, phone up the present insurer and see if they can at least match it. Generally they can, at which point them already having my payment details saves time. If not, I just ask them to cancel the insurance and move on. No drama either way.
What is a problem in my eyes would be insureres auto-renewing without contacting customers a sensible time in advance to warn them that this is going to happen.0
