What's the point in Apple TV & what's the point in jailbreaking it?

If you are lucky enough to have the Apple TV 2 - There are lots of instructional videos on YouTube which show how to Jailbreak and what it can do.
(essentially, if you install XBMC and various plugins it costs nothing to view pretty much any movie or TV Show ever made - plus access any pay tv channel etc etc etc...)
But - you do need patience, sometimes takes a while to find what you are looking for, quality of streams not always great, and you need to be pro-active in keeping software up to date.

With or without jailbreaking, you can use AppleTV to rent and watch movies through iTunes movie store, access Netflix - and if you have iPhone or iPad you can mirror the screen on to your TV. (I'm sure it does other things too but thats all I use it for!)

Once it's jailbroken can you just stream forever? Such as my iPhone was jailbroken on iOS5 & that was it. It was only last week i decided to 'upgrade' to iOS7 because some games i play no longer worked & some other things no longer worked well.

Or do they release things to render the jailbreak ineffective & you have to update & re-jailbreak so you can continue to stream these films?

Current Jailbreak level is 5.3 (if I remember correctly).

You don't update the Apple TV as you'll lose the jailbreak. Updates can be turned off in the settings.

Yes, just dont upgrade anything, my family member / friend has something called 'ice movies' and just watches movies on that channel. Ive not seen this family member / friend/ acquaintance fpr sometime but as far as im aware they have not updraded anything after the jail break. There is lots of info on the net about it all
