Suggestions for lone trips?

I have nearly three weeks off and I am wondering what I should do in this time.
So, I decided on a "group" trip to see one of the many countries in Europe as I have never done so. So, I have been looking around, and found sites like Contki. On the recommendation of a friend that has used Contki before, it would seem that it would be better to just fabricate a trip on your own. I'm not so sure...
I'm just wondering if anyone knows of good sites/deals that cater for the lone traveller? I am also open to the idea of staying in youth hostels.
I would really appreciate any input.
Thanks in advance!

I think that tour operators such as contiki cater really well for the lone traveller, you are not seen as a billy no-mates on these types of holidays as the majority of people who do them are sort of the back packer type, however there are more up-market places that do cater for the lone traveller in that they don't have single suppliments but the majority on the tours are couples etc, however given that there are usually 30 odd of you on each tour the single people are welcomed into the other groups (not all of them but most people do), companies such as vjv.com do tours etc, I went to China with them some years back with a mate of mine, there were a few singles with us, we were all just one big tour group so no-one felt alone/left out
I think that doing it on your own can be a lonely thing, you would hook up with people a day or so here and there but as you tend to have different routes you just sort of meet up and then go on your seperate ways, if you fancy this then you could go interrailing round europe, you will hook up with other travellers etc and it is good fun but being by yourself of a night train can be a very loney and somewhat scary place
hope you have fun in what ever you choose
ps - if you are in london then get TNT magazine from the tube stations, they have loads of tour operators listed in there for the contiki type tours0 -
I have had some great trips on my own either as part of a tour or independent. I decided a few years back that the single supplement was way too expensive in most cases so started to use the International Youth Hostels and not looked back. Okay, some are basic, and some better than 4 star hotels (Dusseldorf in particular)and Isle of Ischia in Italy. People that have travelled with me are now converted. These days most hostels offer single, twin and of course dormitory accommodation. Breakfast is normally included and most offer a hot meal in the evening for a very reasonable cost. Some have kitchen facilities for you to use. More often than not most countries have city centre hostels or close by and all easily accessible. My first "going it alone" trip was to Milan for 3 nights.Soon got chatting with my fellow roomee's all from different parts of the world. All ages welcome - I'm 50 odd, so give it a go, you only have to try it once and if you really don't like it then hook up with the tour companies. What with cheap flights, hostel prices the world is your oyster.SallyD0
