When to start my switch

I'm sure this must have been answered before, however my searching isn't finding the answer...

My current fixed rate comes to an end on 30 April; I have a £60 penalty if I leave early, however I want to move to a new tariff as soon as possible after the 30 April.

So, when should I initiate the switch to be 100% sure I do not incur the £60 fee, and yet to do not languish on what I am sure is an expensive standard rate throughout May?

Thanks!

I tend to start a move three weeks before the end date. Didn't work well for my most recent move though as the Co-op took two months to take over my supply so I was left paying the higher tarrif with my previous supplier for about 5 weeks.

It's just luck, you have to just jump and hope.

I'd also go with 3-4 weeks before. This has worked out well in the past with a week or 2 to spare.
