AVAST - what are they doing?

I've been running Avast antivirus on my current lappy now for about four years with no hassle whatsoever. In November I suddenly got these daily notification that it was due to expire in 30 days. Come the 30th day, I just donwloaded the installation program, went off line, remove Avast and reinstalled it. No problem, all back to normal.

Now again I get notifications that my "free trial" is about to expire.

I've always downloaded the Avast free, so what is changing, or did I unwittingly download the wrong program?

when you installed it, or updated it, did you choose the free option or the 30 day full trial

if you chose free, and your free trial is about to expire, you should be able to re-register for another year by right clicking on the avast icon, and then clicking registration

I remember distinctly clicking on the free option. I may have made a mistake this time around when I re-registered in November, but before that I had it for nearly four years then these notifications started appearing. Will have a look at their downloads, but I appreciate users confirming that the actual, permanent free antivirus is still available.

    they always appear annually

The installer and updater can be confusing as one wrong click and you get the full trial instead of the free one.

Thanks :). I will pay more attention and if needs must I'll do the same uninstalling and re-installing again.

It's not your fault. Avast provide every possible opportunity for people to opt for a paying option by mistake. It's clearly a marketing strategy and not one I appreciate. The software is also much more 'in your face' than it used to be and is gradually adding more and more unwanted functionality. In other words, it's succumbing to bloat.
