Income protection - can we apply elsewhere?

Hi,

Ive recently been refused income protection by Aviva. I was told its now virtually impossible to apply elsewhere as you have to declare on application you have been turned down,?

Is this correct in all cases?

Thanks

There is no automatic decline culture in long-term insurance, such as life assurance, critical illness or PHI.

You apply to another provider, disclose your decline and it will consider you based on your medical history, occupation etc just like any other applicant.

    There is no stigma.

I suggest you seek advice from an IFA or protection specialist before proceeding as some providers will accept some issues more readily than others. Why were you declined?

From personal experience I can certainly confirm it is possible to be declined by one and accepted by others (or even get the decline reversed)

You need to ensure that you know why you were declined. In my case, I was declined twice, one was because the insurer the IFA used simply never insure anyone with my condition and the second was because of the idiotic letter my GP had sent. I got the second decline changed by getting my consultant to confirm that my GP didnt know his !!!! from his elbow.

One stumbling block can be that a lot of insurers use the same reinsurers and unlike personal general insurance for protection there often is a lot more visibility to the book by reinsurers so you may find multiple insurers decline because they all find the same reinsurer is declining

A lot of these automated online systems can give rejections when an acceptance is possible. You need to remember that online sites like to pick up the quick and easy business. They dont like dealing with longer manual cases. You just have to do this via an IFA or restricted adviser with no restriction in protection.

Ill find out this week why I was declined.

I had the medical over the phone with a medical advisor appointed by the insurer.

Its my IFA who has said that its highly unlikely ill get insured.

Ill let you know the reason when they contact me in the week.

    Thanks
