Scottish Power Weird Credit

Can someone please explain how it is possible to have a credit balance on a Scottish Power electricity account where there is no Direct Debit?

I have several times asked this question of SP on Twitter and the answers I have received have not made any sense!!

If you are paying your bills as you receive them the exact amount due by debit card on or before the due date, how has this credit balance accumulated? And why does it never show up or the bill or get applied to the bill?

Looking online at the account and bill history, the credit just appears with no explanation. Bill of £70.53 account £70.53 in debit. Debit card payment of £70.53, account balance £3.78 credit. It's been sitting there for a quite a few months now.
